Everything you need to know before stepping on set. From the perfect 'no-makeup' look to the wardrobe essentials that will make your portfolio stand out to top agencies.

Model tests are the foundation of your professional portfolio. Unlike creative editorials where you play a character, a test shoot is your visual resume. Its primary goal is to demonstrate your “marketability” to agencies and clients—showcasing your potential, your range of motion, and your ability to connect with the camera.

Many models make the mistake of confusing tests with digitals (snaps) or trying to over-complicate the styling. In this guide, I will walk you through exactly how to prepare for a shoot that results in career-building images, rather than just “pretty pictures” for Instagram.

Model Tests vs. Digitals: What’s the Difference?

Digitals (Polaroids/Snaps)

This is the technical “passport” of your portfolio.
— Goal: To show your true measurements, skin condition, and natural features.
— Look: No makeup, simple swimwear or black underwear, soft natural light.
— Posing: Static, strictly front/profile/45-degree angles.
— Retouching: Strictly forbidden.

Model Tests

This is your artistic presentation.
— Goal: To demonstrate your acting skills, movement, and how you “live” in the frame.
— Look: “Clean Beauty” aesthetic, natural makeup, styled wardrobe.
— Posing: Dynamic, emotional, and varied.
— Retouching: Allowed (color correction and light cleaning).

The Prep: 3 Steps to a Flawless Shoot

Body & Mind (24 Hours Before)

— Sleep: Get at least 8 hours. Tired eyes cannot be hidden, even with concealer.
— Diet: Avoid salty or spicy foods and alcohol to prevent puffiness/bloating. Drink plenty of water.
— Skin: Do not experiment with new peels or masks the night before. Stick to your trusted moisturizer.
— Nails: They must be clean and manicured. The industry standard is nude/beige tones or clear polish. Chipped nail polish is a deal-breaker.

Wardrobe Essentials

We are selling you, not the clothes. Keep it simple and timeless.

What to bring:
— Basic T-shirts (white, grey, black) and tank tops.
— Denim: Skinny jeans and boyfriend/loose-fit jeans (no heavy distressing). Oversized men’s shirt, a simple bodysuit, or a structured blazer.
— Underwear: Seamless nude (essential!) and a black set.
— Shoes: Classic black or nude pumps and clean white sneakers.

Pro Tip: Don’t cut the tags off new items. If we don’t use them, you can return them later.

Beauty Standard

— Makeup: Think “No-makeup” makeup. Light foundation, brushed brows, a touch of mascara. Avoid heavy contouring or bright colors—it cheapens the test.
— Hair: Clean, washed the morning of the shoot. Embrace your natural texture. Avoid heavy hairspray; your hair needs to move.

Posing Secrets: Static Kills the Vibe

— Movement: Don’t just strike a pose and freeze. Model tests are about flow. Walk, turn, play with your hair. The best shots often happen “in between” the poses.
— Asymmetry: Avoid standing like a soldier. Drop one shoulder, bend a knee, create angles with your elbows.
— Hands: Keep your fingers relaxed and elegant. If you put hands in pockets, leave the thumbs out so it doesn’t look like they are missing.
— Inspiration: Before the shoot, browse Coco Rocha’s book “Study of Pose” or check top agency boards on Pinterest. Create a moodboard and share it with me in advance.

Red Flags: Avoid These Rookie Mistakes

— Being Late. It’s the ultimate sign of unprofessionalism. Studio time is strictly limited.
— Lack of Prep. Arriving with dirty hair or un-ironed clothes tells the team you don’t care.
— Overacting. Unless it’s a specific character shoot, avoid overly dramatic expressions or excessive sexuality. Keep it cool and natural.
— Silence. The photographer is your partner. Ask questions: “How is the light hitting me?” or “Which is my better side for this lens?”
